The 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final was a football match between Scottish team Rangers and Soviet team Dynamo Moscow. It took place at the Camp Nou in Barcelona on 24 May 1972 in front of a crowd of 24,701. It was the final of the 1971–72 European Cup Winners’ Cup, one of three football competitions run by UEFA at the time. The 12th European Cup Winners’ Cup final in history.
Both teams had to go through four qualifying rounds to get reach the final. Rangers won three of their four qualifying ties in regulation time; with their second round tie against Sporting CP going into extra time. Dynamo required to win a penalty shootout to beat Dynamo Berlin in their semi-final. Furthermore, The final was the Rangers’ third in European competition, having lost the previous two in 1961 and 1967. Besides, this the first time a Soviet team had reached a European final.
Rangers scored two goals before half time and added a third minutes into the second half. Dynamo pulled a goal back midway through the second half and scored; a late second towards the end of the game. The match finished 3-2 to Rangers.
End of the match was overshadowed by a pitch invasion just before full time which it was past 90 mins. So the ref blew with fans still on the pitch and with Rangers captain John Greig autographs having to be awarded the trophy inside the stadium buildings. Despite the off field violence the victory is considered to be the greatest in the club’s history. The team given the nickname the Barcelona Bears.

John Greig, MBE (born 11 September 1942) is a Scottish former professional footballer, who played as a defender. Additionally, he spent his entire career with Rangers, as a player, manager and director. Greig voted “The Greatest Ever Ranger” in 1999 by the club’s supporters and has been elected to Rangers’ Hall of Fame.
Colin Anderson Stein (born 10 May 1947) is a Scottish former footballer. Who played for Hibernian, Rangers (two spells), Coventry City and Kilmarnock. Stein was part of the Rangers team that won the 1971–72 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Scoring one of the goals in a 3–2 victory against Dinamo Moscow in the final. Stein also represented Scotland and the Scottish League XI. Also, he scored nine goals in 21 appearances for Scotland, including four goals in a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Cyprus.
William McClure Johnston (born 19 December 1946) is a Scottish former professional footballer. Best remembered for his time at Rangers and West Bromwich Albion. Besides, he made 22 international appearances for Scotland and selected for their 1978 FIFA World Cup squad; but sent home from the tournament after failing a drugs test.
