James Charles McGregor and Carol Diane (Lawson), both teachers, welcomed their son Ewan Gordon McGregor into the world on March 31, 1971 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Denis Lawson, an actor, is his uncle. brought up in Crieff. He left Morrison Academy at the age of 16 to join the Perth Repertory Theatre.
Parents advised him to quit school and focus on acting rather than choose to be sad. McGregor took a year of theatre classes in Kirkcaldly in Fife. Before enrolling in a three-year programme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
