John Winston Ono Lennon, better known by his stage name John Lennon, was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, and peace campaigner. Also the founding member, co-composer, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles Autographs, which brought him international renown. He died on December 8, 1980. The rebelliousness and biting humour of Lennon’s music, writing, and artwork, as well as his performances on film and in interviews, were hallmarks of his body of work. His song writing collaboration with Paul McCartney continues to be the most popular in history.

Lennon, a Liverpool native, got embroiled in the skiffle craze when he was a teenager. Founding the Quarrymen in 1956, and in 1960 they became the Beatles. Initially the group’s de facto leader, sometimes referred to as “the smart Beatle,” a position that was ultimately transferred to Paul McCartney autographs. In the early years of the band, Lennon wrote and co-wrote hit songs that were rock and pop-oriented. Later, as his songs gained recognition for their increasing innovation, Lennon began incorporating experimental elements into his compositions in the second half of the Beatles’ career. On December 8, 1980, at around 5:00 p.m. Lennon was in New York and signed a copy of Double Fantasy for Mark David Chapman before he and Ono left The Dakota for a recording session at the Record Plant. Around 10:50 p.m. (EST), Lennon and Ono left the session and rode in a limousine back to the Dakota. They got out of the car and entered the building through the archway. Then, at close range, Chapman fired four shots at Lennon—two to the back and two to the shoulder. Besides, at 11:15 p.m. (EST), after being transported in a police car to the emergency room of Roosevelt Hospital, Lennon declared dead.
