Ally McCoist Question of Sport

Super Ally’s Greatest Quiz Show Moments: A Look Back at McCoist on A Question of Sport

It’s hard to talk about British television and sports without mentioning the iconic quiz show, A Question of Sport.

For over 50 years, it was a staple of Friday night viewing, bringing together some of the biggest names in the sporting world for a battle of wits. Additionally, for a significant chunk of that time, one man was at the very heart of the action. Equally, bringing his unique blend of footballing knowledge, quick-fire humour, and infectious personality to the show, our very own Ally McCoist.

Between 1996 and 2007, Ally was a fixture as a team captain, making a remarkable 363 appearances. Part of a legendary era, captaining his team against the likes of John Parrott and later, Frankie Dettori and Matt Dawson. Furthermore, all under the watchful eye of presenter Sue Barker.

What made Ally such a beloved figure on the show wasn’t just his impressive sporting background, but his ability to make us laugh. A natural charm and wit that made for some truly memorable moments. Who could forget the time he famously failed to identify himself as the mystery guest in a clip? Or the story he’s since told about writing answers on his arm before the show? It’s these kinds of self-deprecating antics that endeared him to a nation of viewers.

His time on A Question of Sport showed a side to Ally that many football fans might not have seen. More than just a prolific goal scorer for Rangers and Scotland. An entertainer, a brilliant storyteller, and a genuinely funny guy. On-screen chemistry with Sue Barker and his rival captains was a huge part of the show’s success. Equally, creating a warm, friendly atmosphere that made it feel like you were just watching a few mates having a laugh.

It was no surprise then that Ally was “really, really surprised” and “equally disappointed” when the BBC announced the show was being axed in 2023. As a former captain and a lifelong fan. Also, felt the show was a “compulsive, great viewing” part of British culture. His sadness at its cancellation was a sentiment shared by many who grew up with the show.

Ally’s legacy on A Question of Sport is secure. He wasn’t just a captain; he was an integral part of what made the show so special for so many people. Bringing a footballing legend’s insight, a comedian’s timing, and an everyman’s relatability. Also, creating moments that will be replayed and remembered for years to come.
